NEW DATE: I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning: Anniversary Gig

This event was originally scheduled for Friday 24 January but due to weather warnings, has been postponed to Thursday 27 March. All tickets remain valid.

To mark twenty years since the release of Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, Joel Harkin will be joined by a seven-piece band and special guests to perform the classic album in its entirety.

Just as resonant now as they were in 2005, Conor Oberst’s sprawling lyrics on I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning explore perennial themes of isolation, nihilism, American imperialism, and that last stubbornly inextinguishable spark of hope. Sonically, the album charts a course through popular music from Beethoven, to the vigour of 1960s protest songs, to desolate country of the 1970s, and on through the alternative music of the 1990s and 2000s. This talented collection of friends and collaborators will faithfully recreate these ten songs about being very young and feeling very old.

Joel Harkin is a musician from Convoy, Co. Donegal who has made a home for himself in Belfast’s music scene. He has loved Bright Eyes for half of his life so far. He’s been looking forward to this for ages.

“Let’s f*ck it up, boys. Make some noise!”

Imagine Belfast presents: Politics of The Imagination

Imagine Belfast presents: Politics of The Imagination

An evening of genre-defying, humorous and hard-hitting music.

Boundary-pushing rappers from the Birmingham hip-hop scene – Joel the Custodian, Kosyne and Barrowclough – team up with avant-garde classical composer Anselm McDonnell.

Central to the concert is a performance of their collaborative theatre work Politics of the Imagination, which explores concepts of utopia, political dogmatism, and bitterly opposed worldviews. Commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra and described in a 5-star review from The Morning Star as having, “all the potential to be realized as a full theatrical Hamilton-style British success… a hugely memorable piece,” Politics of the Imagination asks the question: how can imagination and playfulness inform our approach to political problems? The event features a panel discussion with the artists about their collaborative work, and solo sets from each rapper.

Setting the Scene:

In the rural constituency of Nether Whittaker, local politician Steven Bavington-Smythe believes he has all the answers to the post-Brexit, post-pandemic economic slump his town is facing: a government investment in his wife’s tech company to create jobs and level up the area. After grappling with several journalists at a press conference over the issue, he is accosted by an activist (and old schoolmate) as he enters the elevator. Their bickering is observed by an enigmatic lift attendant, who knows that not everything is as it seems in this particular elevator…

Meet the Artists:

Kosyne is a rapper, producer and label owner based in Birmingham, and has been releasing music and performing around the country since the early 2000s. Within the hip-hop scene he has supported artists such as Pharoahe Monch, Ghostface Killah, MF DOOM and more. He was one of the founders of underground label EATGOOD Records and was also creator of LOUISDEN, a popular hip-hop producer network and curated beats event/label. In 2024 he released his debut album ‘I Was Here The Whole Time…(some rap stuff by Kosyne)’.

Barrowclough grew through the cracks of the Birmingham hiphop scene in the late 90s and was part of the pioneering rap crew Michaelis Constant. A solo album and a couple of EPs materialised in the new millennium, but since 2020 he has worked on larger narrative and experimental project. He released the Boudicca Bap EP in 2020 (as Boudicca Hill) and then, in 2024, he unleashed two narrative rap projects- avant garde classical music/hiphop hybrid ‘Politics of The Imagination’ and a new solo album, ‘The Riddle & The Spyglass’.

Joel the Custodian is a Birmingham-based filmmaker, writer and rapper. As well as releasing various rap albums and EPs since 1997, Joel has promoted UK hip-hop acts and co-ordinated gigs and music video shoots. Joel co-wrote and directed medieval rap film ‘The Quickener’, a one-of-a-kind period drama in which all the dialogue in spoken in rap and poetic verse. In 2022 he released two albums of unrelenting lamentations, ‘SXXTStorm’ and ‘PANDÜZIMA’. His work explores courage and cowardice, the specter of death and wild animal encounters. His current inspirations are rapper Billy Woods and activist-artist Nadya Tolokonnikova.

Anselm McDonnell is an Irish/Welsh composer based in Belfast. His music has been performed in fifteen countries, available on fourteen CDs (including three solo albums), and he has been commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, BBC Singers, BBC Concert Orchestra, NSO Ireland, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Crash Ensemble, HRSE, BBC Radio 3, British Council, Belfast City Council, Galway City of Culture, and the National Concert Hall Dublin. His wide range of interests have led to multimedia and multi-genre work in collaboration with rap artists, lighting designers, theologians, poets, filmmakers, fashion designers, dancers, and actors. His music has been described as, “abrasive and compelling” (Irish Times), “bristling with energy” (GoldenPlec), “bright as fluorescent light” (Journal of Music), “a wide musical imagination with a vision to match” (Morning Star), and “perhaps the contrasts and complexities that it contains are a musical reflection of the multi-layered nature of what it means to be a composer in a community as complex as Northern Ireland.” (Robert Hugill)

Imagine Belfast presents: Songs of Freedom featuring The Vibes

Join us for Songs of Freedom, an all-ages Sunday of Ska and Reggae at the Oh Yeah Centre presented in collaboration with the Belfast City Council’s City of Music Industry Sessions.

An expert panel chaired by Charlotte Dryden of the Oh Yeah Centre, and featuring Kim-Marie Spence, Joseph Ricketts, Mykaell Riley and Siobhan Brown, will ask why Belfast connects with Ska, Reggae, and Two-Tone?

The upbeat tempos of Ska, soulful rhythms of Reggae and raw energy of Two-Tone carry stories of struggle, resilience, and hope. These genres have soundtracked movements for social justice and provided solace in times of turmoil. Our panel delves into the history of these iconic sounds, exploring their impact on Belfast culture and beyond, and why they continue to resonate with us on a personal level.

Stay after the panel event for a DJ set with Stu Unadog, Resident DJ at Jungle Boogie, and music by The Vibes, an 8-piece soulful reggae band who have shared a stage with many major artists over the years including The Slackers, The Toasters, The Specials and the one and only Lee Scratch Perry!

This is an all ages gig, and your ticket includes entry to both events.

About the band

The Vibes are an 8-piece soulful reggae band based in Belfast. Formed in 2014 they immediately began a monthly residency in The Belfast Empire. The band worked as support act for legends like Lee “Scratch” Perry and The Specials, as well as New York ska heroes The Slackers and The Toasters. The Vibes released their debut album Workin’ in 2017 but were soon forced into hiatus when trombone player Willie McLean suffered a severe stroke, the band gradually returned to do some small shows in late 2018 and 2019.

After another enforced hiatus in 2020/21, The Vibes returned to the studio in 2022 to record a second album, The Vibes Play Don Drummond, consisting of 9 tracks all written by Jamaican trombone innovator Don Drummond of The Skatalites. The album was conceived by Vibes trombonist Willie McLean with song arrangements by UK brass icon Dennis Rollins (Jamiroquai, Maceo Parker, Blur). On this album The Vibes pay homage to some of the greatest early ska music with 7 instrumentals and 2 songs including Simmer Down, Occupation and Latin Goes Ska.

With another album worth of original songs still to be recorded, the band also do a wide array of covers, some reggae songs by the likes of Jimmy Cliff and Alton Ellis, but also lot of non-reggae songs from artists like Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, Arethra Franklin and many others, given the reggae treatment.

The Tibbs
May
3

The Tibbs

The Tibbs originally took off in 2012 - fronted by the amazing Elsa Bekman – covering a lesser-trodden path, combining special soul classics with rare beat instrumentals. Their increasing popularity quickly led to a natural desire to expand their repertoire, beyond the confines of others’ inspirational endeavours towards their own soulful creations.

Produced by Paul Willemsen (Beans & Fatback, Lefties Soul Connection, Michelle David & The True-tones), the resulting EP Cleaned Out debuted in 2014. Later that year, the German funk and soul label TrampRecords released their debut single – Footprints In The Sand /Cleaned Out – delivering deserved international airplay for The Tibbs.

Two years later, famous Italian label Record Kicks released The Tibbs’ first LP, Takin’ Over. The first single from the album, Next Time/ The Story Goes – again produced by Paul Willemsen – received critical acclaim on radio stations throughout England, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Canada and Australia.

Though the talent was obvious much earlier, the release of Takin' Over delivered the band far richer rewards. Playing sold-out venues in both Milan and Frankfurt, The Tibbs’ profile rose further still with wonderful festival performances in Germany and Hungary, followed by a successful sold-out tour of Spain. Throughout this period, more new music was being created; the Lies 45 released in December 2017, and six months later, This Strange Effect was included on the celebratory Record Kicks 15th compilation album.

After some deliberation, in late 2018 Elsa decided to follow her heart and focus on a solo career. The Tibbs duly began their search for a truly worthy successor, bringing astonishing vocalist Roxanne Hartog and the band together for the first time. With a selection of incredible new tunes and an album (Another Shot Fired) drawing fantastic reviews, The Tibbs played sold-out shows in The Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Spain.

In January 2024 their latest album Keep It to Yourself came out, a true tour deforce that left listeners awe-inspired, foot-tapping and heart-soaring. On this 12-track album The Tibbs once again prove that the passionate sounds of the past can have a fresh and vibrant place in the music of today. Whether you're a devoted soul aficionado or new to the genre, just get ready for a musical journey that will revive your spirit!

The Tibbs are:
Roxanne Hartog - vocals
Henk Kemkes - guitar
Anton Titsing - Hammond / keys
Michael Willemsen - bass
Bas de Vries - drums
Berd Ruttenberg - baritone sax
Frank Stolwijk - tenor sax
Siebe Posthuma de Boer - trumpet

Rescheduled: The Liquid Engineers: The Gary Numan Experience

On behalf of the Liquid Engineers - The Complete Gary Numan Experience we would like to confirm a reschedule of our proposed gig at the Oh Yeah Music Centre Belfast.

The new date is May 16th 2025, all tickets already sold for our 2024 appearance (May 10 2024) will remain valid. Due to Gary Numan announcing his UK tour, starting in May, we feel it would be in everyone's interest to move and reschedule the date. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we promise for 2025 we will more than make up for this with a powerhouse of a show covering over 45+ years of Gary Numan’s music career.

Gary Numan has been cited as a major influence on acts such as Nine Inch Nails to Prince, his music has been covered by acts from Beck, Blur, Basement Jaxx and Africa Bambatta.

Marilyn Manson, Little Boots and many more.

Standing within the smoke and haze effects and with the light show transporting  you to the front row seat of a Gary Numan concert, Pat Martin without doubt, the hardest working UK Gary Numan tribute, delivers a vocal and visual spectacle from the moment he hits the stage.

The Liquid Engineers: The Gary Numan Experience are the UKs premier tribute to his 40+year music career. They are a 5 piece live band, drums, guitar synths guitar lead guitar creating that huge Numan wall of sound.

New Street Adventure featuring Nick Corbin + Carmy Love

New Street Adventure featuring Nick Corbin + Carmy Love

Led by singer and songwriter Nick Corbin, New Street Adventure released two albums on the legendary Acid Jazz Records, producing soul-fuelled tunes cut with a distinctly British edge that saw Nick hailed by The Guardian’s Tim Jonze as having “an innate understanding of classic songwriting”.

The band toured the UK and Europe several times, headlining the likes of London's Jazz Cafe and 100 Club, Hamburg's Mojo Club and sharing the bill with the likes of Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Milk, Leroy Hutson and The Rifles, before separating in early 2018.

Carmy Love

Soul singer Carmy Love launched her solo career in 2021, with her debut 45 'Rebel / Thinkin' About You' on Big AC Records selling out prior to its official release and gaining praise from Craig Charles (6 Music), Robert Elms (BBC London) and Norman Jay (Soho Radio) amongst many others.

Born and raised in North West London, Carmy had a rich musical upbringing: Her Mother and Step-Father were DJs on several underground stations including Roots, Unique and Flava Radio. The likes of Janet Kay, Louisa Marks and Chaka Khan all featured heavily during her formative years, whilst an early grounding in Gospel singing developed her vocal style and stage craft.

Having also sung with Cool Million, PM Warson, Charles and House Gospel Choir, Carmy was also an original member of New Street Adventure, making a major contribution to “No Hard Feelings” - NSA’s debut album on Acid Jazz - with her stunning backing vocals elevating the record to modern soul classic status.

The Gold Tips

The Gold Tips blow a non-stop soul hurricane. They emerged out of Belfast, fully formed, not too long ago. Their distinctive, righteous sound, created and driven by frontman Eamonn McNamee, is soaked in a deep love of Sam Cooke, Stax & Rock ‘n’ Roll and has already seen them pack clubs and carry them to festival main stages.

The band opened for the legendary Nile Rodgers & Chic to a sell-out crowd at Custom House Square, Belfast in August 2021 and Van Morrison on the same stage in 2022.

Their debut album ‘Parade’ released in February last year, is a 9 track, horn-drenched, glorious squall forged in the great sounds of the past and sounding absolutely of the moment.
